In Article Marketing are Keywords Important

On a recent training webinar I was on, I heard someone ask “if keywords were important to Article Marketing”. While I just about fell out of my chair laughing, I caught myself and realized that this was actually a very good and common question. A Keyword is like a sail on a boat; no sail means no direction and is at the mercy of the ocean. If you write an article and use no keywords and submit online, you are at the mercy that someone will just stumble upon your article.

Choose your words carefully

Keywords are so critical to your article; you need to pick your keywords before you actually start writing. Your keywords need to have some thought as they will be used throughout your article marketing campaign. If you do not choose your keywords carefully, you will be missing out on a ton of traffic or readers. When you use keywords in your article marketing you want to consider these two options:

Main Keywords or Short tailed Keywords – These keywords are words or phrases that you want to use to help your site rank higher with the Search Engines. Along with Google, you will find that when you rank high; mainly page one, you will rank high on all the Search Engines.

Long tailed or peripheral keywords – These keywords tend to be not necessarily longer but more specific, which means there isn’t as much competition.

See examples of each below:

A short tailed keyword or phrase could be something like – “Advertise on the Internet”

A long tailed keyword or phrase could be something like – “Advertise on Bing”

A Strategy for your Keywords

One thing that many people do not do but actually works really well is building links out of your keywords. If you are in the business of marketing and you write an article about article marketing and link the word marketing back to your site, it really helps you. When you do this it helps the Search Engines really understand what your site is about, the more you do this with your articles you will start seeing your page rank increase which helps you rank on page one. As you and I know ranking on page one is the coveted real-estate, do you go to page two very often? Me neither, and to be honest I do not know many people that do go past page one.

Ranking the Long Tail Keywords

When you start your article marketing you want to have a few long tailed keyword articles. Like the example I gave before, “Advertise on Bing” is an article I wrote. Now as you can see, a long tailed keyword phrase can only have a few words, but they are very specific. In the title you know what the article is about; advertising and Bing. The awesome thing about long tailed keywords is the low amount of competition there is out there on the internet, you have a better chance of ranking on page one. While you may have less competition it also means less people are searching for that topic. To maximize every long tailed keyword article it has to be some of your best work, if you have concerns you could always outsource.

Do the research before you write

Keyword research is a very important piece of the puzzle, and don’t ever underestimate its power. There are a few free tools to complete your research but the one I like and use is Google’s Keyword Tool. You insert a few keywords and then it shows you the results of competing web pages and how many searches per month were done. Just remember changing a word or two in a phrase could have a huge impact on the results. See the examples below:

“How much would it cost to paint a car” – this could show 24,785 different web pages but maybe only 50 searches per month

But if you take the same question and change one word to say

“How much does it cost to paint a car” – this could show 29,393 different pages but the search results per month jumped up to 3358

As you can see the two different keyword phrases are really close but one word changes the statistics dramatically. If you were able to write an article on this subject, you would be a lot smarter to use the phrase “How much does it cost to paint a car”.

Next time you write an article, take a quick reference to this article and think about your keywords. When you dive into the world of article marketing, your keywords will help you drive the desired results you are looking for.

Clearly, Microsoft and Yahoo has agreed to disagree (on the acquisition/takeover), but also agree that they have a ‘common enemy’ named Google.

As such, situational relationships commonly result in sleeping together. And before you know it they had a baby.

This simply means that Yahoo gets better presented to the searchers, as clearly Bing tries to sway some of the Googlelovers which Yahoo search failed to; Microsoft gets real meaty materials for the search results (and most probably a part of the ad revenue).

Implications for the marketers: watch this space! If Bing does take off (and early reviews indicate this is quite a possibility) then it is time to get more serious on Yahoo! Search Marketing.

The real question is, as apparently is the risk with all childbirth, will the relationship become victim of postnatal depression?

Change; we hear a lot about change today. President Barak Obama spoke widely of change in his lead up to the presidency and as we now know, it was his mission statement and attitude towards his governance of the USA. Amidst political rhetoric, there was change on another scale that was taking place right through the political campaign. Politicians are known for their vast budgets during their campaigns and there was none greater than this. The Obama political campaign not only topped budgets but there was a change far greater in their approach to the campaign itself. This political campaign was the first ever US presidential campaign that targeted internet marketing unlike ever seen before. Some speculate that the personal one-to-one nature of the internet marketing campaigns were part of the driving force in the Obama victory.

Change; there is great change taking place in the internet marketing domain unlike ever seen before. On average a person is hit with over 2000 sales or marketing messages each day. This is almost too much to contain when you think about it. Telemarketing, trade shows, seminars, direct mail / response, TV ads, news paper ads, banners, billboards, etc. clutter our lives so much that meaningful messages are often diluted or drowned in this ocean of messages. The marketing and public relations domains are hard pressed these days to come up with penetrating ad content that reach their target audience. The great change we notice taking place in the internet marketing domain today deals with a concept termed inbound marketing. This strategy deals with the concept of being found by consumers rather than pursuing and hitting consumers with marketing messages.

The concept of being found is like a tropical bird that flutters colourful feathers and dances to a beautiful beat in the hope that its partners hear them and advance in their direction. Being found is all about developing an expert opinion in your industry and attracting visitors naturally to your sites. The concept of being found needs to be applied meticulously as one can imagine, there are plenty of birds making plenty of noise in the jungle.

Being found entails trying to understand who you are trying to attract in the first place. What is the marketing persona i.e. your target market? If you are a hotel based in Leicester Square in London, UK then your target market could be tourists visiting London looking for a central location to stay; or the theatre market with so many production shows in close proximity; or even perhaps the younger tourist club goers catered for in the region.

Marketing for being found in the internet domain carries two basic ground rules – content and engagement.

Without content there is very little value to the consumers you want to bring on to your site. Content could be in the form of a blog site, articles, reports, white papers, press releases, eBooks or useful snippets of information. The critical characteristic of the content should be that it is useful and interesting to the target market. Content is absolutely critical. Let us explore some of these content tools.

Blogging for business is one of the simplest forms of creating content. It is short and if interesting could hold an audience captive. It is important to not only blog about who you are but more so the wider context of your services and products. Consumers are savvy. They know when a business blogs for the purpose of profit. They are not interested in subscribing to product descriptions. They seek unique value. A hotel near Darling Harbor in Sydney, Australia could capture a wider audience by talking about the happenings in its surrounds. For example speaking about tours from the harbor, the opening of the Lindt café close by, the Sydney aquarium and updates on its seal population. Perhaps if one is targeting the Japanese market, the mention of the Sydney Fish Market being in walking distance to Darling Harbor and providing some of the freshest seafood in the world would provide that edge i.e. that unique bit of knowledge which makes subscribing to your blog worthwhile and a true value addition. The key is to make content interesting, non commercial and more so viral in its nature.

Article writing campaigns add tremendous value to your site by the exposure they provide your site through their numerous channels of distribution. They also add fabulous SEO value to your site. eBooks are useful when given out free due the viral nature of the product i.e. people love to share free things especially if its current and interesting.

Speaking of SEO it is critical that the content we spoke of previously follows strict SEO guidelines. SEO is not as complicated as many people make it sound. SEO takes time and it is not a miracle strategy that promises immediate results. It takes time. Once you get your head around that concept it is not that complicated. It involves for the most part using the appropriate keywords i.e. words that your target market are likely to type on search engines in order to find you. A powerful set of keywords used in attractive content is a key step to SEO. Building links is possibly even more important. That is the same as asking other sites or blogs to hold your web link on their URLs. That basically counts as a vote for your site. The more votes you have the more important Google or Bing think you are and the more SEO value you hold. The more SEO value you hold the higher up the search engine results your go. Of course SEO experts would also say that your web URL, titles, descriptions, the use of ALT text, anchor text and the listing of your sites on search engines such as Google or Bing are important and they are indeed. However instead of trying to trick search engines I think what most companies or businesses should do is to try and focus on the most significant element of SEO – content and votes. The more interesting your content and its significance to your target market and other sites, the more likely you are to attract more visitors to your sites.

As much as content is important to the strategy of being found, it is pointless unless the businesses engages with its consumers. The internet has made the lives of marketers simpler and more resourceful. Never before have sales and marketing teams ever been able to engage directly with so many consumers (millions!) using such simple tools. The internet has become social. There are watering holes in every savannah and it is up to marketers to try and find them. Watering holes are where your customers or target market gather. Where the elephants, buffalo and giraffes gather to drink water is where you want to be if you are trying to sell the latest and tastiest varieties of green herbal delights. Social media platforms have made engaging consumers even simpler. Engagement need not be complex but it can turn out to be lifestyle marketing. Hanging around where your consumers hang around to talk is an age old theory. For example where would you hang around in ancient Israel to discuss the latest news – the Synagogues; or where would you go to in old London to discuss politics and trends – Speaker’s Corner. I am sure you understand what I am saying. The internet has made news sharing and discussions even simpler. There are more watering holes available today than any great African grassland holds. Blogs, Google Forums, Yahoo Groups, Yahoo Answers, Linked In groups, Facebook Fan pages, Facebook groups, Twitter, You Tube, Hi5 and MySpace are all watering holes where consumers gather. It is up to you to listen out for topics of interest and engage consumers; or even start new conversations. Do not be blunt, nobody likes a salesman pushing products where value addition is sought after. Always remember to focus on adding value. Make sure your consumers see the value addition and seek out your product rather than have your product pushed at them.

Forums are abundant today. I contribute to and edit a blog spot named www.StrengthTrainingChronicles.com which engages weights trainers, rugby enthusiasts and gym goers with useful material. In order to engage with my consumers and discuss / learn new trends I Google searched Forums for such watering holes. The results I received were unmanageable. From specific community / social web sites such as bodybuilding.com to countless numbers of forums focusing on varying aspects of the sport the research results were too many to count. Results ranged from geographic variations from London to LA and sport niches from StrongMan competitions to Nutrition. Finding watering holes is simple. Communicating with your consumers and adding value is what will bring more consumers to your site. This is public relations campaigning and brand building as never witnessed before.

Bringing guests to your home is wonderful for most of the time. But do you let the kids play around the vases or bring the movie crowd into the garden? Having a specific landing page is essential. This welcomes your target market to a target web page. Once found, visitors must be made into leads. Leads are people interested in listening to you about your product or service. Leads must be then converted into sales. Leads sometimes take time and need to be nurtured with emails or promotions together with calls to action

If it cannot be measured it cannot be managed. Being found must be quantified in order to determine if you are being found to begin with and by the right consumers. There are so many companies that have gone bankrupt in 2009 by paying little attention to ROI (returns on investment) or budgeting their use of internet marketing. ROI is all about making the decision if your course of marketing action was worth it or not. It is important to make note of the number of visitors to your site, the ratios of lookers to bookers and the ratios of those moving onto your landing page and then entering their email information onto forms. These figures are particularly useful when gauging a new marketing tool you have employed such as engaging a certain forum or a press release or article. Google Analytics and other tools make these functions simple.

We spoke of change in the beginning and there is great change in the horizon. We are seeing a convergence of web design companies, sales, marketing, advertising agencies and public relations into one company focused on being found via inbound marketing. The days of effective TV, Radio and advertisements on magazines are shrinking as the number of ads clutter useful listenable messaging. Bing is Microsoft’s latest launch in the war against Google. If you think it will blow Google away, think again. Bing will definitely attract many users, however, since it has solid relevancy as well as key features not offered by Google. Consider these 5 unique features of Bing.com you won’t find through other search engines.

Search Results Organized into Categories

Most significantly, Bing breaks down its results into specialized categories, rather than a lump sum. You can drill much more specialized results by clicking on the category links.

Some searchers will most likely ignore these categories, which Bing anticipated. The next time you go looking for images, wouldn’t it be nice to just keep scrolling without worrying about running out of page? Bing offers infinite scroll through images, so you can just keep pressing that down key until you find what you are looking for.

One place where Bing fails miserably is planning multi-day trips, such as cross-country drives. It’s nice to be able to add in Point A as the start and Point B as the end. However, when I want to pick a stopping point along the way, say to stay at a relative or at a Motel/Hotel, there is NO insert between point A and B. The user has to make the in between point the new EndPoint and then add the original EndPoint all over again. This could be corrected simply, by adding an Insert point on the map, rather than changing the end or adding on to the end.

Will social media eventually be integrated with the major search engines into one version of search engine marketing? There have been questions and doubt as to whether the combination of the two will ever evolve as an extensive adaptation of their social search technology.

But the popularity of Facebook may speed up the integration process with its report of a 10% gain of around 436 million queries in the latest February search query report while other comparable sites showed a net loss.

Facebook changed the layout design of their home page by moving the search box from the right hand side to the middle of the header. By making the box more visible near announcements and social network updates, it greatly increased Facebook’s latest queries report.

While Facebook continues to grow its popularity from 436 million searches in the latest report, it is still very small compared to Google’s billions of queries. But it is still a significant leap for Facebook and forecasts more possible growth in their user base. Advertisers may consider using PPC advertising on Facebook’s web search instead of social media marketing campaigns, especially since the fan page material and brand profiles are not considered reliable as ROI data due to problems tracking conversions.

Although growth for Facebook also reflects BING’s increase, it is not included in BING ‘s total market share. But Microsoft’s search engine technology runs Facebook‘s web search–their AdCentre platform (the MS version of AdWords) provides paid ads in search results. So the possibility of search engine partnership deals with Microsoft and BING may happen instead of Yahoo or other search engines.

If you have a physical address and and haven’t claimed your claimed your business on Google Places, Yahoo Local, and Bing Local, there is a good chance that you are in big trouble with your online reputation. Minnesota Web Experts used to have to do our search engine marketing by calling out things like Minnesota web design, Minnesota web hosting, Minnesota search engine marketing, or Minnesota search engine optimization – today is a different day since these local online directories do that for you based on where you are located when someone does the search. One more thought before we begin; advertising in the Print Yellow Pages and other local print sources is old news. Think about it – do you know where your print yellow pages are because I surely don’t!

Here are the facts:

Search Engines out-perform print yellow pages by nearly 50% as the primary source for local business information.

It isn’t just young people that have quit using print yellow pages as even the 45-54 year old demographic uses search engines more as their primary source for local business. Unless your only customers are 60+, you need to change now or watch your new business prospects slowly fade away to your competitors.

According to Google 73% of all searches are related to local content in one way or another. While internet purchases are rising, for every dollar spent on the internet, five dollars are spent offline on products and services that were influenced by online research.

And how about this?

91% of U.S. internet users do comparison shopping and research online and of that group 51% explicitly characterize themselves as “shop online, purchase offline”.

If taking advantage of the local search optimization opportunities isn’t on your to-do list, you risk becoming invisible to the paying public who are looking for the products and services you offer!

Claim Your Local Business Listings!
While Google is the “big dog”, you are short changing your business if that is the only local search engine place you claim. Think synergy because that is how these local portals work. Interestingly, Google will pick up your business activity on other sites like Yahoo Local, Bing Local but so many more. Have you heard of CitySearch, InsiderPages, HotFrog, or Yelp? Google sure has because it picks up comments on those sites and displays them on their own Google Places site. We haven’t mentioned the other sites like Angieslist, Judysbook, and various online yellow page directories nor some very industry specific directories important in some categories.

In all, there are over 100 local business listing sites that play a key roll in how you show up in search engines when a potential customer looks online for local business information. If you spend money on search engine marketing – search engine optimization and your vendor hasn’t said anything about this or your businesses haven’t been claimed – fire them now!

Whether You Like It Or Not….
I’ve had potential customers tell me they don’t care about doing anything with these local business sites since their business is already on them – oh really? We are helping a local Dr. with his online reputation and found the following. Before he claimed his local online listings, they had an old address, a wrong phone number, and his business name was wrong. Besides that, everything was perfect – UGH!! At least they had his category right and knew he was a doctor…..

These Local Sites Allow Comments But Do Not Lie!
We went through the local listings and found some Minnesota Web Expert competitors had dozens of comments. However, they were all BS and I’m not talking “best stuff”. While it might make sense for competitors of Minnesota Web Experts to have comments about Minnesota web design or Minnesota web hosts, real people would not make comments about Minnesota search engine optimization. The phrase Minnesota search engine optimization is industry lingo that only insiders would use. When potential clients call us for online marketing, they ask how do I get to the first page of Google, not SEO and not Minnesota search engine optimization. That is the same situation for other categories where people fake comments using their own industry lingo – you can see them a mile away! If you fake comments, then potential customers also know that you are probably unethical in other ways and they will move on to another vendor.

We start with the negative on local online business comments to make sure companies don’t cheat because synergy works in negative ways too. Besides businesses using industry lingo like Minnesota search engine optimization, we also see 25 comments all on the same date across local business websites like Google Places, Yahoo Local, Yelp, YellowBot, etc. These companies aren’t smart enough to realize that many of these comments are collected on the various local business sites which mean with one quick search, a potential client will notice all of these comments on a single day saying exactly the same thing. Cheaters never prosper and the thing we’ve noticed is some competitors going so far as to call out cheaters that use these tactics.

At the end of the day, word of mouth everyone knows that the most effective method of gaining new customers but how “word of mouth” spreads is now online with local business listings. Encourage your customers to make real comments online on these sites as bring incredible search engine optimization synergy to your business. Fake comments will be seen by potential customers and they will move on to others that act in an ethical manner. Remember Minnesota search engine optimization examples when you consider making up people/comments on these sites.
