We, as search marketers, should spend most of the time creating, measuring and adapting the best performing keywords and ads, for our customers. In fact, one of the most time consuming activities in a PPC management company is the daunting task of ad testing. Nowadays, bid management can be automated, keywords research is not as hard as it used to be and reports customization it’s a trend.
However until now, no “big” players on PPC management software came on the market with an ad testing management tool.
We invest and spend lots of time in testing ads, simply because it’s a major part of our PPC optimization process. And testing ads takes time; create, test, analyze and again.
Of course, if you manage a small account (5-10 ad groups, with 10-20 ads) managing the tests won’t be a problem for you (choosing the winner, it will be an issue, if you have more than one ad in your ad adgroups).
What if you have hundreds or thousands of highly targeted ads, split across various ad groups? How do you manage the test? Normally, you would create at least two ads per adgroup, and after one/two/three/whatever weeks you look at the performance and, “hmm, this ad has a conversion rate of 5% compared to the other one which has a 10% CR. We’ll keep the 10% ad running and create a follow up test”. Usually, this is how it goes.
But, did your decision considered the percentage of ad serve, the number of clicks and conversions, all from a statistical point of view? Most of us don’t look at the whole, because that information is not there. You’ll have to use Excel to analyze ads’ performance further. And we humans, are lazy by nature. If it’s not in the front of us, we probably won’t bother doing some additional spreadsheet work.

The above is not an actual screenshot from the Adwords interface. Further, imagine you don’t need to browse the slow interface or download reports to know when a test reached its end; you will receive an email from them. Although many restaurants have a web site, most of the restaurant sites are really lame, displaying only a couple of photos of their place and simply posting their phone number for people to make reservations.

This is adequate, but a web presence should mean much more for restaurateurs than just showing some information.

The latest Internet Usage Statistics (June 2008,Nielsen//NetRatings) tell us that there are more than 220 million Internet users in the US. This represents 72.5% of the population, and means that most of your potential customers have access to the Internet.

And yet, most of the restaurateurs are doing next to nothing to promote their business online.

A web site is a great vehicle for you to communicate with your existing and potential clients, so why are most restaurateurs not using their website more to do their online marketing?

There are probably some reasons, likely including the lack of technical knowledge and Internet experience of many restaurant owners. But having a solid web presence doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. Online marketing is a great way to cheaply advertise and promote your business if you follow these 10 rules:

1. Have a clean and easy-to-navigate website. Hire a web designer if you need to, but make sure that you know how to update your site. Some restaurant owners outsource all their web services, including updating and maintenance of the site. This is a big mistake – since you should be posting information frequently, and relying on an external partner means delays, inaccuracies, etc.

2. Don’t choose form over substance. This is a mistake that many web masters/designers make. Just because they can use fancy flash intros, with music and sophisticated graphics doesn’t mean that these effects should be used. There is nothing more annoying than visiting a website looking for information only to suffer through a distracting and totally useless Flash movie. Remember, your website is there to provide your clients with valuable information, and to collect their information so you can include them in your database. Any other reasons are superfluous.

3. Post meaningful information often on your site so that people visit frequently to check out your updates. For example, you can announce special events that you are hosting, such as charity dinners, wine dinners, new menu items, etc.

4. Give something away in exchange for contact information and create a database. This is very important – since the more names and email addresses that you have from your clients, the more you can use this information to send messages with promotions, gift certificates, discount coupons, etc.

For example, you could use an opt-in form that says something like: “Please enter your name and email in the form below to receive a coupon for a free entr?(or a 15% discount, gift certificate, etc.) so you can try our wonderful restaurant” Not only this is a great way to capture new clients, but the marketing cost for you is zero. If it doesn’t work, you don’t have any expenses. If it works, you have a potential client for life. There is no downside here.

It is a good idea to add an optional Birthday field (ONLY month and day, you don’t care about the year). This will be really useful for you to use when sending gift certificates or discount coupons whenever a birthday is coming soon. Not only will you attract the birthday person, but they will bring along friends and/or family as well, since birthdays are usually social events.

And remember, don’t give coupons to people at least that they register. You want to capture as many names and emails as possible.

5. Post some videos and photos of your place, but don’t post them in the main page. Some people like to know what to expect before they go to your restaurant but they don’t want to get annoyed if they have already been in your restaurant and are looking for only certain information.

6. Add an online booking module so that people can make reservations directly through your website. You can contact a company like OpenTable (www.opentable.com). This adds convenience for your clients since they can book right there and then, plus it’s also convenient for you since you know who is coming ahead of time and can make arrangements to have the appropriate number of staff, etc.

7. Offer a map and directions to your location. This is very easy by integrating modules from Google or Microsoft Maps, Mapquest, etc. Your webmaster will know how to do this if you don’t know it yourself.

8. Create a monthly or quarterly newsletter and post it on your site. You can write about your staff, your dishes, if you have an ethnic restaurant, you can write about the country or the region where the food comes from, some fun information, etc. The point is to keep your place fresh in the eyes and minds of your clients.

9. Post a recipe (or even better, a short video with your chef cooking some signature dish). This will make your place unique and special. And don’t forget that you can also post your video in external sites such as YouTube, etc. attracting more potential clients.

10. Send emails to the people that you’ve captured via the opt-in form from your website as well as any other email addresses you’ve collected. Remember, you need to give your existing clients some incentive for them to give you their names and email addresses, so that you can add them to your database. Because of the peculiarities of email marketing, I will discuss this vehicle in a latter newsletter.

And remember, your website should be an extension of your restaurant. It should reflect your vision, your strategy and your values. You don’t want your potential clients coming to your restaurant after seeing your web site only to get disappointed when they find that their experience in your place is nothing similar to the one promised in your web site.

Always think about your clients when you add content to your site. It is there for them, not for you. If you follow my easy steps, your site will be much better than your competitors’ – and your marketing will improve considerably.

 The semantic Web is an evolution in the way the Internet stores, recalls and displays information, and has been continuing to evolve for the last couple years. The semantic web is no longer as speculation about the future of the net, the semantic web is almost here, and something forward thinking business’s should be considering in their marketing strategies.

 What exactly the Semantic Web

 In order to understand the meaning of the Semantic Web one must first embrace two concepts – totality and accessibility:
Totality – to what extent are things defined online

The Semantic Web is a web of data where everything is defined and linked to anything with which it has an association. In this Web anything conceivable must be represented and relevantly associated.

Accessibility – to what extent is the Web accessible to computers

The Semantic Web is a web of data perfectly accessible by machines. It is a Web that computers are able to interact with, interpret and utilize autonomously – without the need for any human intervention.

 Using the traditional web as a resource for planning requires a fair deal of man-powered research and visiting quite a few disparate web services in order develop enough information. When using the semantic web starts at a point where it is a given that all the data relating to you, and all the data relating to your specific search, in essence it is about returning results that are computer optimized to be specific to you

 Understanding the Semantic Web

User-generated-content heavy segments like social networking, music and photo sharing sites are some of the first places where it’s already possible to enjoy genuine Semantic Web experiences.

Product sites like Amazon are another good place to experience Semantic Web. Their ability to offer products based on their relevance to users’ needs, intentions and social circles, is another Semantic Web early bird, albeit a rather primitive and limited one

 How To Market Within the Semantic Web

Be aware of the coming change, keep your ears and eyes open for developments and deepen your understanding by reading blog posts .

 Tag the widgets you’re marketing comprehensively so that they are readily identifiable by computers. For example: If you’re selling football jerseys make sure to tag your inventory not only with the relevant team names but also with tags defining your merchandise as “clothing”, “shirt”, “jersey” and/or “fan merchandise”.

 Link the widgets you’re marketing meaningfully to assist in there identification. This is especially true for ambiguous terms. For example by linking this instance of the word “Pink” to the last.fm page dedicated to the singer of the same name I’ve effectively removed all possible ambiguity as to which “Pink” I meant. 

Connect your site to relevant APIs wherever possible. If you deal in real-estate try integrating a map service like Google Maps. Music your thing? Integrate Last.fm or Hypster, etc.

There are two types of optimization that online business owners need to pay attention too, search engine optimization (SEO) and conversion rate optimization (CRO).

Content optimization is the most misunderstood SEO tasks. Search engines are not interested in any content. They cannot read. They only look for patterns. The pattern tells the search engine whether the article is acceptable. Not following that format tells the search engine that the content is not good quality.

Visitors on the other hand are looking for three things – a solution to a problem, a way to make life easier, and entertainment.

No one website can be everything to everyone. For every 1000 people who visit a website, only 200 will stay, and only 10 – 50 will buy. When a visitor buys, it is called ‘conversion’ to visitor.

The percentage rate between the number of people who click a web page and buy is called the conversion-rate. If ten people buy, then the conversion rate is 10/1000, a good conversion rate for an online business.

A good web page need to satisfy both search engines and visitors. Creating good web pages starts when the owner understands SEO strategies, rules, and guidelines.

The Old SEO is Dead!

The first thing that you need to understand is that the internet changed in 2004. All that stuff you are reading about meta tags, keyword density, duplicate content – that is all gone.

The world was introduced to the new internet SEO in 2004 called WEB2.0. Web2.0 is focused on content, not meta tags. In fact, now, in 2007, there are only two meta tag search engines left.

The only reason you need to focus on meta tags now is so that Google’s AdWord program can match ads that sell the same content as the web page is talking about and pre-selling.

Search Engine Optimization and Web2.0

Web2.0 is different than any other internet search program in that you are telling the internet what is important and what isn’t. Social networking is creating directories that visitors are filling – and the crawlers are reading them to find out what to rank high.

Evern Google’s page ranking system has very little meaning anymore. Now, what you need to do is format your articles so that the crawlers can read them, catalogue them, and compare them to the social network to see if they match what people are reading and ‘tagging.’

A Search Engine Optimized article, blog post, forum post:

•Not Longer than 1200 words
•Each article/post is a different length
•Most articles/posts are longer than 400 words
•Headings (H1 and H2 headings) are used – in order. They may be resized to a normal font size to make the web page look better
•No more than 2 – 5% keyword density – this includes the words in the link bars and the graphic descriptions.
•Sub heading appears every 50 – 200 words.
•The first introduction of Important/keywords are bold

An Article at Risk of Banning or that Receives a Lower Rank:

•Doorway pages that have more than 5% keyword density
•All articles are longer than 1400 words
•Hidden content – text is same color as the background
•Loaded keywords – more than 5%
•Misleading meta tags – meta tags do not appear in body of article
•Too many keywords – more than 10 keywords for an article
•Using content from free content sites as the only content on the site
•Plagiarizing content – stealing content can have you reported
•Graphics with no ALT tags – this will not get you banned, but crawlers cannot see pictures, so they cannot rank them. The description tells the crawler what the picture is.

Attracting search engines is only half the battle. Once the search engine brings someone to the web site, the content must convert them to buyers. If this doesn’t happen, the web site will not be profitable.

You really have to forget the AdWords sucks rhetoric you hear from  internet marketers because they are dead wrong! Experienced pay per click, (PPC) users, after having their account’s banned, must have made 20,000 posts on forums all over the internet with the same “sucks” title. On one hand, I don’t blame them.

How would you feel if your business was wiped out in a manner of minutes? Yes, it was that severe.

Some people had 5 year old or older accounts banned and they were making ,000-0,000 dollars per month. That’s a huge hit. It’s like losing a long term job except you can’t get unemployment compensation.

And many new people, being trained by out of date techniques wouldn’t even get one ad published and their account was banned just based on the initial website submitted.

Maybe the worse thing about the whole banned mess is that there are still people direct linking and or using weak, thin websites that are nothing more then a bridge to a merchant. Those people are lucky and one day when a human reviews their account, they’ll be gone too.

Agree or not, in my opinion, an AdWords account is essential to making the most money as an affiliate marketer. But you must have a decent web site or don’t bother with Google’s AdWords, you’ll just get banned for life.

The first benefit of course is earning  instant profits. It’s simple. Run an ad, searcher clicks to your web site. Searcher reads your value added content and is warmed up then clicks through to the merchant. Merchant’s job is to sell the searcher on their product. Searcher buys and you earn your commission.

That in itself is POWERFUL.

Here are two other benefits that most PPC people don’t talk about.

First is page rank.

Just by running a value added, good content AdWords campaign, you will get awesome page rank for the landing pages used in your adwords campaign.

This is even more powerful.   You don’t get full value from your clicks as far as page rank goes but you get enough where you can use your time working on other sites without worrying about search engine optimization with your AdWords sites.

The other benefit is practically an instant email list. Using a contact form from a email responder company with a great give away practically equals  instant success. You’ll have clicks that buy and with a great give away, you’ll have clicks that sign up on your email list.

This goes a little against the grain as most internet marketing instructors advise against anything that may prevent your visitor from doing anything other then clicking through to the merchant. Even with a great campaign, many clicks, probably 75% or more, will leave your site within 4 seconds. You paid for them to visit and you get nothing from it.

But, with an email capture form, you will get approximately 20% of that 75% of visitors who leave to leave their email address. This is huge and you’ll earn a good living just from that alone! AdWords is the engine that pulls the train and once you get it going, it’s not going to stop. Unless you get your AdWords account banned so be careful and make sure you use a good website full of great, original content.
