How To Put Together An Effective Web Marketing Strategy

If you have a product or service that you would like to promote online, there are various ways available for you to do so. The availability of many different marketing channels means that you have varied ways to attract traffic to your website and make profit. But if you want your campaign to be effective, you would need to put together a plan. Here is a good example of how to plan a successful web marketing campaign:

 

Determine your objectives

 

This will vary, depending on what exactly you are promoting. Maybe you want your own product to sell well. Or attract new customers to your brick-and-mortar business. Perhaps you are promoting affiliate offers and want to maximize the amount of commissions that you earn.  Maybe you run Web Designfirm and want more clients to come to you. Think about what goals that you desire to achieve with that marketing campaign. How much profit do you want to make, how many sales, how many new customers do you want to attract in that time period, etc.

 

Set your budget

 

Ask yourself how much you are willing to spend on your campaign. What amount of money would you be willing to spend per day, per week, per month in order to attain the objectives that you have set for yourself. Note that various advertising methods have different costs associated with them. For example, Email Marketing to a list that you already own will set you back less than the time costs of using Social Media Marketing.

 

Choose the advertising channels that you will use

 

There are many ways to get traffic to your site. Will you be using pay-per-click marketing, social media marketing, email marketing, media buying, video marketing or other methods? Each method is different and has its inherent advantages and disadvantages. You also need to consider the difference in cost between various different advertising methods out there. Remember that in some cases you will need to do some web design in order to build different landing pages to better suit the ads that you have put up and to track results. It is always a good idea to fully study each advertising channel, so that you are better able to see how it works, how it can benefit you, and whether it will be a good match for the objectives that you have set for your campaign.

 

Make it happen

 

One mistake that many marketers make is to spend too much time planning and visualizing what could happen instead of taking action and making things happen. If you are doing something for the first time, start slowly to test things out. Once you get going, you always have the opportunity to make some changes or to optimize your campaigns to make them work better. As you acquire experience in various aspects of internet marketing, you will be able to make things run a lot more smoothly and efficiently, but experience comes from doing and not dreaming.

“I have a website, now what? I really don’t understand what my website should be doing for me.” This statement, from a successful manufacturing company owner, was made during a recent “Introduction to Web Marketing” seminar held by The Net Impact. “I know it’s up there and I’m proud of it I guess, but what is your website supposed to do for you?” This comment caused a lot of conversation in the room and opened the floodgates to similar comments.


“I have a website.” another business owner said, “I just don’t know if its bringing me leads or not.” Another person joined in with, “I seem to be slipping in the rankings as well and I’m not doing anything different. I think this is affecting my lead flow. What can I do about it?”


How many firms have the same questions? From this encounter and similar concerns raised in other seminars, I would have to say quite a few. Most firms we see at our seminars have a website that is three to five years old. Many times this is a second or even third generation site that replaced an older or original site. Interestingly enough, the most often cited reasons for these “next generation” website efforts usually have nothing to do with marketing! Business owners in many cases dramatically change their website or build it all over again mainly because of a change in their core business or because they simply don’t like their old site. With the notable exception of e-commerce sites, sales and lead flow had little to do with their reasons for the creation of a new site or their selection of the web development firm that produced it.


Website cost vs. website return on investment


Many businesses are mistakenly more concerned about the “cost” in building their new site than they are in how they will maximize their ROI from the site after it’s online. The reason behind this is pretty basic. It is almost always easier to control a checking account than it is to develop an effective revenue strategy. Thankfully this, “I got a deal.” approach to evaluating the value of a website has been changing to, “I made a good investment.” Increasingly firms are understanding that their website should perform, it should generate revenue and thus be considered a business expense rather than simply a one-time outlay of capital.


Over the past two years we have increasingly heard concerns about a site’s marketing impact, lead flow and search engine placement. Why? The old standby methods of generating business and their primary approach to advertising for many of these firms; direct mail, print media and yellow pages ads, are rising in cost while at the same time they decline in effectiveness. Business owners now more than ever realize that their website holds great potential and performance is a necessity. Yet most firms simply put, have a website and are now realizing they need a web strategy! We see this changing environment regularly in our seminars. The main questions business owners ask us as they start to re-evaluate their web approach are:


1) What is my website supposed to be doing for me?


2) How can I tell if it is doing this (in example: providing leads)?


3) What needs to be in place to measure results?


4) What efforts are required to improve performance?


5) How do I determine my return on the investment I have made in my site?


These are all great and common questions that reflect symptoms of not having identified a strong web strategy. In these next few posts we will address these questions starting with, “What is my website supposed to be doing for me?” This leads us into a discussion of differing web strategies.


Determining your “Web Strategy”


Deciding the desired functionality for your website and thus the major part of your web strategy can be challenging. There can be an irresistible urge to “keep up with the Joneses”. Some firms create sites that are way over the top and overly developed way beyond what are really their genuine online business requirements. Like office space, an elaborate and expensive website is not always a guarantee of success. We urge clients not to let corporate ego or peer pressure determine their approach to the web. At the same time, without advance planning and market awareness, an underdeveloped site will cost you business and stature. As in most strategic planning, it is best to start with the end in mind.


What do you want your website to do? Not really that tough a question, the tougher question is how to accomplish that.


Today we will start with a most basic use for your site:


Is your web strategy fairly simple? Do you just need your website to reinforce your business card?


You are of course aware that after an introduction at a conference or frequently even prior to a sales call, many prospects will call up your website to learn more about you and your organization. If your business is face-to-face, your approach is personal and your market local, then your website may need to do no more than provide a source of information supportive to the “elevator pitch” you just delivered to that new acquaintance or prospect from the conference or other chance meeting. A site built for this purpose should be simple and informative but also should be authoritative for the decision maker you are about to approach with an idea or service.


If this describes your business, then following these guidelines may be enough.


* Keep the information simple – viewers want information about you and your services. They will go elsewhere for the weather, time, entertainment, inspirational messages or stock quotes. Give them exactly what they want.

* Keep the design basic – no one wants to see marching monkeys, flashing pictures or burning logos. Just because your developer can do something clever, is not a good reason to do that something clever.

* Keep the site current – information must be accurate and up-to-date. As importantly, feature your contact information, phone number included, prominently on the site. Don’t make prospects dig deep to find out how to talk to you. Also, it is very inexpensive, even free, to have an email service provider on board to provide that important stan@stantheexpert vs. stantheexpert@hotmail or other less impressive email address. And for all of our sakes, watch it with cutesy email addresses. You really don’t want to be remembered as ladiesman@yahoo or something similarly distracting do you?

* Make sure your site works – How does your site look in Firefox, IE7, Safari or on an iPhone? Do your links work? Is your “contact us” form in good working order? Simple, up-to-date and functional are the basics.

* Don’t be afraid to be authoritative – are you an expert? Tell us! Publish this on your site. “What do you know and how will it help me?” is a question that needs to be answered for a viewer.

* Use web analytics tools – even a simple site should be measured for effectiveness. What pages do viewers visit? How long are they on the site? Where do they come from? All good things to know.


This simple, user-friendly, authority site need not be overly expensive. If you stay local and do not need the search engines to bring traffic to your site, you can make periodic changes to the site as needed for very little expense.


So, let’s put this strategy to the five question test above.


1) What is my website supposed to be doing for me?

In this basic case, represent my business in a professional and authoritative manner for prospects and partners who check us out online! Provide easy to find contact information.


2) How can I tell if it is doing this (in example: show credibility)?

Be proud of your site! Ask clients and prospects if they have seen your site. Did they find the information useful? Make your site the springboard for a face-to-face description of products and services.


3) What needs to be in place to measure results?

A simple web analytics tool like Google Analytics can be quickly installed for free. Though far from perfect, it will give you general information about your traffic and visitors. It also has great help screens.


4) What efforts are required to improve performance?

In this case, very little. Make sure your information is accurate and up-to-date. Keep articles and information on services topical and current.


5) How do I determine the return on my website investment?

It is hard to totally evaluate the return in this case on a minimal web investment since you are not trying to generate leads just as it is complicated to determine the cost of not having a website. Prospects and partners want to find out about your business online. The site then should give you peace of mind that your firm, regardless of size, is well represented online for referrals, prospects and recruiting. Use your online information as a springboard for launching into a sales meeting.


In this most basic web strategy, follow the steps we discussed above and your website will represent you in the simple, professional and authoritative manner you really need in order to support your face to face client meetings and close those sales!

An ezine, or electronic newsletter, is an effective way to get your message across to your prospects and clients. Many small business owners think about offering one, but sometimes have difficulties putting the entire process into place. Whether you’ve been operating an ezine for a while now, or have been contemplating starting one for your business, take a look at these tips.

1. Identify your target market and what your ezine will do for them.
Putting a signup box on your home page doesn’t give people reasons for signing up. They want to know what they are signing up for. Give your ezine a name, and have a “More Information” page that describes what your ezine offers. Provide a link to a sample or two, and consider archiving your ezines as well.

2. Don’t hide your information.
If your goal is to create signups for your ezine, make that a prominent part of your website. Tell your visitors what you want them to do. Lead them through your website, and ultimately to the action pages on your site. You should always have a page devoted to your ezine, describing it in detail, and requesting your visitors to sign up.

3. Provide the best information possible within your niche.
Thanks to the Internet, people are better educated than ever before. If you hear a term, or find an interesting phrase in a magazine, its easy to Google it, and spend a few minutes educating yourself on the newest technique. Your ezine has to go beyond this basic education.

Think of your ezine as an information piece that opens up ideas to your target market. What can you do to inspire your readers? What can you do to help them learn and apply something new? If you gain their trust by supplying useful information, they will come to rely on you for a wealth of information.

4. Stay current.
Nothing kills subscription levels more than providing the same information, over and over again. Reward your readers that have been with you from the beginning by constantly reinventing yourself.

Start by developing a formula for your ezine. Once you have a system in place, try something new and track the results. For instance, you may send a text ezine and an html ezine. Which gets opened more? Or you may play around with the amount of information provided; do your readers like quick tips, or more informative articles?

Remember, just because something holds true today, doesn’t mean you can’t retest a few months from now. People change quickly, especially online. Give your readers what they want, and create a desire for your information.

5. Ask for the referral.
Is your information of value to your readers? Chances are your readers have friends. Ask for the referral.

I was at a family member’s house about one week ago, went to use the computer to check my email and something appeared different. Something a little strange lurked; there was no quick way to use Google as a search engine.

Where the Google toolbar used to be, there was a Bing toolbar, where the Alexa bar used to be, there was a Bing toolbar.

Can They Capture the Market?

Not totally, but from this maneuver Microsoft’s Bing will gain a lot of search share. While MAC computers still use Google and there is no option to download a Bing toolbar (ironic because Google and Apple are seemingly bigger competitors than Apple and Microsoft), more people, in this economy, are buying PCs. This could be true for a long time. Yes, the iPad and iPhone will help a little, but it won’t do anything close to drastic.

Despite buying a PC, the younger generation will still download Chrome or some other browser conducive to Google searching. Conversely, for those who are lazy or don’t know about these specialty browsers, it appears that they are looking at a Bing life sentence.

Additionally, when the economy turns, more and more companies are going to have the need to replace old computers. Subsequently, more and more companies’ employees (decision makers as well) are going to have to turn to Microsoft’s search engine. You can circumvent it, but going to a 3rd party website prior to finding what you want is tedious for a population who has become decidedly lazy due to the web.

It is my true belief that Bing can get a 5%+ gain from this little trick. However, I would not be surprised if a Google vs. Microsoft heavy weight court battle commenced over this subject. Though, by the name any decision would be made on this matter, it would be too late.

Some Subsequent Business and Marketing Implications:

Online marketing companies

Mainly this concerns your online media and SEO companies. To stay in business, they are now going to have to study the Bing algorithm. The public knows very little about the search engine, though to really dig deep and find out what makes it tick will take a lot of time, a lot of studying and we all know that people are lazy. Though, I do recommend that you learn the algorithm. It’s not as difficult.

Google looses advertising revenue geared towards the older generations

Despite the fact that most young adults are buying MACs, American’s older generation (60yrs and up) is almost definitely going to stick with the PC. Therefore, they will be forced to use Bing. That is unless grandma figures out how to download Chrome and piling on an Alexa toolbar (mirrors the Google algo) on top of that.

Drug companies will then bring in swarms of marketing personnel to figure out how the older crowd searches Bing and their particular usage of the search engine. Wilfred Brimley will become more of an internet sensation than Justin Bieber.

MACs get some of the 40 – 55 age group

The word is going to get out quickly that PCs are, indirectly, blocking Google. This may present an opportunity for MACs to sell to the older, upper-middle class consumer. They won’t get the aforementioned crowd, but they will make a go at it.

Google continues to fight to make their PPC campaign work, but it will now see more roadblocks

There has been a lot of speculation around Google’s new ad platform. They need one because, for most companies, there is no ROI generated from the advertising model. It’s a long explanation as to why this is, but let’s put it this way, corporate America, the failure is more your fault than theirs.

Microsoft’s marketing team may have to come to work and beat the PPC model

After getting beaten badly by Apple and Google as if they were the Cleveland Browns, Microsoft’s marketing team may have to come back from the South of France, Mexico or wherever they have been hiding. They then have to stop letting the interns run the advertising: “Los-links” equals “Loss-Dollars.” The PPC model won’t bring Microsoft back to glory. On the other hand, if Microsoft can pull something off, they may take a chunk of B2B advertising to Google’s behalf.

Email Marketing – Is It Part of Your Marketing Strategy?

There are many voices out there today, each one clambering for our attention. In our home based business, we get bombarded daily with offers that we are told we just can’t refuse! Each one offers their best marketing strategy and/or courses, which if you will just simply buy it; it would literally set you financially free! Ever been there?

Well, that’s not what I’m going to do here!! We’re going to be talking about one subject: Email Marketing and email marketing strategies. Clearly there are more marketing strategies than email marketing. The fact is, there are many different marketing strategies out there, and we have many choices, but you have to decide which ones you want to implement. A strategy that has worked well for me and other internet marketers is to start with two, maybe 3 marketing strategies. Get very familiar with those, and make sure they are working for you. Don’t let anything or anyone sidetrack you. Stick to your guns. Once you have those mastered, move on to the next 2 or 3, but don’t abandon the original 2 or 3.

There are many marketing strategies, and I’ll name a few, such as:

• Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yuwie, Friendfeed, Squidoo, etc

• Articles – Ezine, Articlebase, BetterNetworker, etc

• Press Releases – FreepressRelease.com, 24-7pressrelease.com, PRWeb.com

• Videos – You Tube, Traffic Geyser, Camtasia, etc

• Blogging – WordPress, Blogger, Digg, etc

• Forums – Warrior Forum, Google and Yahoo forums, etc

• Email – Viral Host, AWeber, List Bandit, List Joe, Viral URL, etc

There is a myth floating around out there that I want to address right now, and that is this: There is a common misconception by many people nowadays that the internet is too competitive, and that a newbie [slang word for a newcomer to the internet] cannot possibly hope to succeed running against the big dogs, or the more seasoned internet marketers.

Nothing could be further from the truth! There are many ways of making money online and so many opportunities and niches to take advantage of. And the bottom line is this: there are constantly new people coming online, and new people looking for business opportunities. The key is to find something you are interested in, have a passion about, and begin to market in that niche.

This is not about niche marketing, and at this juncture I’m not going into how to find your niche and finding the right keywords to market your niche or product. There are plenty of articles and blogs out there about that.

You can find plenty of articles and blogs about all the different marketing strategies, but what I’m going to focus on here is email marketing. Email marketing is a key part of any marketing plan, but where that falls in priority for you is totally dependant on what your marketing strategies might be.

I’m going to assume that you already have your list [if you don’t contact me, and I will help you with that, or point you in the right direction]. Email marketing lists are important, but maintaining them and keeping them up to date is even more important.

In email marketing, your reputation is important, more so online than offline. Both are important, but most of us reading this are trying to build a home based business through an online presence. We build and develop our online reputation through social media engagements, blog posts, press releases, articles, forums, videos and etc. Our reputation actually is created by our readers, and if we continue to supply them with valuable content, our reputation grows.

When it comes to building our reputation in social media, it is important to not bombard your friends and followers with just links to your site. Several times throughout the day is okay, but provide valuable content, such as positive quotes, links to videos that can help build their business, etc. A whole article could be written just on this subject, and many have been written.

Our online reputation is what makes our email deliverable! That’s right; our reputation is what helps get our emails opened. If our reputation has become tarnished because of some negative posting on a forum or a negative blog, it will definitely affect email deliverability. If people on our list view us negatively, they tend to blacklist us, and now the email goes into the spam box instead of the inbox. That will have a direct impact on your bottom line.

Here are 7 tips that will help get your emails delivered.

Tip#1: Manage and Maintain Your Online (and Overall) Reputation

a)  Can’t say enough about this – it is completely within your control!

Tip#2: Get Opt-In Permission

a)     You have to provide options to your subscribers to allow them to change their subscriber preferences. Subscribers have to have the option somewhere in your email to opt-out if they so choose and it should be plainly visible.

Tip#3: Recipients Expect Frequent and Valuable Content

a)     I get some emails on a daily basis, and one even sends between four and six per day. However, I always read them, because invariably they provide good and valuable content. Actually, two or three times a week is sufficient, and there is even some thought out there that once a week is enough. It really depends on your list and your product.

b)     The bottom line – whatever your frequency, it has to contain relevant and valuable content. If not, they will opt-out or drop it into the spam folder!

Tip#4: Use a Recognizable “From” Address

a)     I’ve received email from online marketers where it was kind of obscure as to where the email was coming from. There are plenty of email providers out there (see list above) so there is no excuse to not have a recognizable “from” address.

b)     Make sure your subscribers have a way to reach you. If your “from” address in your email is not a reachable address, provide one somewhere in your email. I prefer to provide mine in the signature of my email.

Tip#5: Design the Header of Your Email to Deliver Your Message

a)     This is the first thing they see when they open their mailbox! If you know anything about copywriting, you know that the header is the most important item to getting your email opened and read. This can be the difference between a successful or unsuccessful email campaigns.

b)     Let’s say you aren’t good at writing headlines – there are plenty of sources out there where you can find someone that is. Go to elance.com, post what you want done and you’ll find someone that can do it for you. Just be sure to check them out thoroughly and get some good verifiable references. For as little as 0 you can get someone to write you a great email campaign with a great header.

Tip#6: Spam – Who Defines It

a)     Does it really matter who defines spam? Absolutely!! What comes to mind when you think of spam? Most times the response I get is “It’s sending unsolicited emails.” Really, is that it???!!! If that’s what comes to mind, then you definitely need to familiarize yourself with what spam really is!! It can mean the difference between getting your email opened (delivered) or not.

b)     CAN-SPAM laws were created and enforced by the FTC [Federal Trade Commission]. What is CAN-SPAM? The acronym CAN-SPAM derives from the bill’s full name: Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing Act of 2003.

c)     ISP (Internet Service Providers), as well as the FTC have a large part in determining what is or is not spam. ISPs do not rely on CAN-SPAM to define spam. Their contention is that spam is first and foremost defined and determined by the user. If, for example, a user determines the email is spam by putting it in their spam folder, or in their blocked senders list, or just simply not opening it, then the ISPs consider it spam – whether or not it adheres to each and every rule of CAN-SPAM

d)     Stay current on the CAN-SPAM rules and make sure that every email campaign complies and adheres to those rules. Be sure that your email recipients can opt-out easily. Remind your email recipients of the email address they should use to request information or if they have any questions.

Tip#7: Relevance and Continuity

a)     When the potential client and/or email recipient clicks on your PPC ad or a link that you provided in your email, it is imperative that what you had in your email and/or ad is where the link goes to. For example, if you are advertising something about weight loss, make sure that when they get to your site, you are actually promoting weight loss, and not something irrelevant – like, let’s say skiing!! Remember….it’s your reputation. If it doesn’t connect or is irrelevant, it could make the customer want to consider future ads irrelevant and they will avoid clicking on them.

b)     When that happens too often, search engine algorithms will then label your ads as irrelevant, suppressing the Search Engine Marketing (SEM) and PPC conversions. SEM is only relevant if you have a website

The last thing I want to cover (and certainly not the least) is search engine marketing. Search engine marketing can and does have a great impact on your online reputation, i.e., your email deliverability. What is search engine marketing? Glad you asked!! Search engine marketing is the performance of marketing or advertising your web site through search engines, like Google, Yahoo or Bing. Search engine marketing (SEM) may consist of one or more of the following components:

Pay Per Click (PPC) - On the right side of the page you will see little boxes or ads, and those are what are considered PPC [Pay Per Click]. Every time you click on those, the advertiser pays Google, Yahoo or Bing (the amount depends what search engine you are using). You bid the amount you are willing to pay per click. The more you bid, the more likely your ad will appear higher in the search engine results. Google Adwords has implemented an additional aspect.  Your ads will rank based on the relevancy or importance that Google places on your site, which is very difficult to manipulate. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – Google, Yahoo and Bing [formerly MSN] crawl through content of your article, blog, website, etc., and look for valuable and relevant content. SEO is what gets you in the top 10 positions on the left side of the page when it is opened up. It is referred to as generic listings. Pay For Inclusion (PFI) – What is PFI? It is a search engine marketing technique that involves paying for a Web site listing in a Web directory, for example Yahoo Directory [not same as Yahoo Search] or Verizon’s SuperPages. The bottom line is you are paying to be included in a Web directory. In addition to search engines, like Google, Yahoo and Bing, various other directories also exist on the web. These directories can either be general in nature or can be related to a specific topic. You can get free listings in some online directories, like DMOZ. However most directories now charge for a listing. Yahoo describes its directory as: Subject-based directory listing websites in a wide range of topics, from arts, entertainment, and society and culture, to science, education, and health.

So is Search Engine Marketing Important?

It really depends on whether you decide to make search engine marketing a part of your marketing and advertising strategy. If you don’t have a Web site or ever plan to have one for your business, you certainly wouldn’t need search engine marketing. But in today’s business climate, it’s hard to imagine anyone not wanting or having a website, as nearly all business are expected to have a website and most do.

Search engine marketing is used as a means to get traffic to your website. This again can be done through your emails with links to your website, or through SEO, PPC, or PFI. This then should ideally lead to getting new customers and adding to your home business revenues.

When compared to other means of advertising and marketing, search engine marketing can be very cost effective. For instance, you could implement some SEO techniques on your own. Organic search rankings are free, so if you can move yourself up in the rankings, your traffic should increase, which, in turn, should increase your home business revenues.

In the same way, PPC can be very cost effective. Since you can set limits on how much you’ll pay per click and how much you’ll pay per day. By doing that, it’s fairly easy to keep your costs in line. As previously mentioned, some Web directories like DMOZ allow free listings, while others can cost as little as – per year.

In closing, it is vital to your success to keep your lists up-to-date so that you can optimize your response rates, your conversions, and your overall email campaign performance. With all the spammers and fraudulent email senders out there, it has created a lot of mistrust. So I can’t stress enough how important it is to consistently update your email list, review your list often to establish which email recipients haven’t opened or clicked through for the last six months. Make them another compelling offer, and if they still don’t open them, you might want to try one more time, but then take them off your list.

You need to have a web marketing strategy if you consider generating an income from the start with your online business.
